« ASP.NET AJAX 1.0 Has Been Released! | Main | Design In Drive »
I'm currently backing up my data so I can go back to using Windows XP.  This is the third time I've given Vista a serious chance at being my primary OS.  I really want to love Vista.  The interface, the glass effects, the new start menu and lots of little things make Vista very compelling.  However, my productivity has gone nowhere if not declined.  I've got software issues.  I've got driver issues.  Sometimes my CPU just loves to stay at 100% for no real reason that I can see.  Maybe there's some background indexing going on, but the only choice I have is to reboot.  Sometimes I try to expand a folder in Explorer and end up watching a cute animated hourglass/folder until I want to start beating my keyboard with anything within reach.

I'm really disgusted with how much time I've wasted on Vista.  I'm a geek.  I'm addicted to new and can't help myself.  I'll probably be back.  But not until SP1.  Good grief.

I hear you! I've not tried it out yet because I'm afraid of going through what you're going through right now. If my lowly laptop can handle it, I think I'm going to try and install it using VirtualPC. If I do, I'll blog about my efforts/misfortunes.

Word on the street is that Vista does a lot of prefetching of programs it thinks you will use so that they load up faster, and because of that 2GB of RAM is the minimum needed for optimal performance. Real nice of them, huh?

Sorry to hear it isn't working out for you. I've found that 1gb is plenty to run Vista on my laptop, though I will often use a USB memory stick to cache more programs. Only drawback is my sound card isn't supported by my harware-manufacturer. Good luck in the future.

I love vista for my wife. I got it on her computer and I did an upgrade and all is working good. One thing I hated I converted some video files and when done I went to the folder and they where not there. I clicked details, list and nothing. There was a button that says compatibilty files. I clicked that and all showed up. The other big thing all my Icons from the upgrade look bad. I guess I just have to wait. It took a while to upgrade to XP but when I found my 500 mhz ran ALOT better on XP then even 98. And along with that My first look at office 2007 I said this will cause alot of problem. But after just a Day a like it alot better then the old.

Greg and Sam: I've got 2GB of memory on my laptop, and most of the time Vista performed great. It was just the random stuff like the 100% CPU and explorer hanging when expanding a folder (sometimes for several seconds, and sometimes it never recovered) that just drove me absolutely nuts. I saw some speed improvements in Visual Studio 2005, which is one of the main reasons I wanted to run Vista, but nothing like the huge improvements that I've read reported by other developers. It completely boggles my mind that some companies didn't have a Vista-ready upgrade or new version by the time Vista officially launched. It's not like they didn't have plenty of notice :)

Dennis: I think most everyone agrees that Office 2007 is the best upgrade in years. To continue the baseball metaphors, Microsoft hit that one out of the park. Definitely recommended.

May be it's time to go back to a Mac?
Sound Off on Vista... This is the main thing with SFF Small Form Factor PC. I use a Shuttle XPC, the power of a desktop in a shoebox 8D
