In case you haven't read this somewhere else, MySQL announced yesterday the Release Candidate for 5.0.  What's New includes:

  • Views (including updatable views)
  • Stored Procedures
  • Functions
  • Triggers
  • INFORMATION_SCHEMA data dictionary
  • Server-side cursors (read-only)
  • VARCHAR data type (size increased to 64KB)
  • BIT data type
  • Precision math (DECIMAL data type)
  • FEDERATED storage engine (access to tables in remote databases)
  • ARCHIVE storage engine (for storing large amounts of data with minimal overhead)

MySQL is also running a bug-finding contest.  Each week for the next 8 weeks they are going to give away an Apple iPod nano.  Three grand prize winners will also be selected to receive an iPod nano, a ticket to the MySQL users conference, and dinner with the MySQL development team at the conference.
